How to Split a PDF and Extract Specific Pages

Published October 3, 2026 ยท By the ForgePDF team

A long PDF is not always what you need to share. You may want only the invoice from a bundle, one chapter of a report, or each page as its own file. Splitting lets you do this without retyping or rescanning anything.

Three ways to take pages out

Split into single pages gives you one file per page, usually bundled as a ZIP so you download one archive. Extract a range keeps consecutive pages together, for example pages 5 to 9. Extract or remove a single page is the quickest way to pull one page out or delete one you do not want.

How to do it with ForgePDF

Open Split PDF, choose your file, pick all pages or a range, and download the result. To extract exactly one page, enter the same number as the start and end of the range. Everything runs in your browser, so the document is not uploaded.

Extract or remove: which one?

If you want to keep a few pages out of many, extract them. If you want to keep almost everything and drop a few pages, remove those pages instead. Both leave your original file untouched and give you a new PDF.

Tips before you split

Check page numbers in the viewer, because the number printed on a page can differ from its position in the file after a cover or contents pages. Decide on a naming scheme so the split files are easy to find. And if you plan to recombine pages later in a new order, merging is the natural next step.

Splitting is also a reliable way to get under an email size limit when every page is needed: send the document in two or three parts.

Choosing the right page range

Page numbering can be confusing when a PDF contains a cover page, inserted scans, or printed page numbers that do not match the PDF viewer's page count. Use the PDF viewer's actual page index when selecting ranges. After extraction, open the result and confirm that the first and last pages are the ones you intended.

Keep the source document

Splitting normally creates a new document rather than changing your original. Keep the source until every extracted file has been checked. This is especially important when the PDF is an official record, application packet, contract, or archive.

Splitting as a privacy and file-size workflow

Sending an entire document when only a few pages are required can expose information that the recipient never needed. Extracting the relevant pages can therefore improve both convenience and data minimization. It can also reduce upload time and help a document meet a website's file-size limit.

Checklist before sharing an extracted PDF

Practical checklist

Keep the original, complete one clear task at a time, and verify the result before sharing it. This makes document work easier to troubleshoot and reduces accidental data loss. For important files, use clear filenames for the original and the working copy so you always know which version is authoritative.

ForgePDF is intended for quick browser-based utility work. The best workflow is usually the shortest sequence that produces a correct, readable result. When a document is sensitive, also review the site's privacy information and your own device security.

When the document is used for an application or upload, compare the final page count with the requested range and make sure no unrelated page was accidentally included. This small review step is especially useful for scanned packets where the printed page number may differ from the PDF viewer number.
